Top 5 Harry Potter Couples

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to go to the Harry Potter studios tour. It made me realise that despite how irritating JK Rowling has become with her political antics (18 spare bedrooms!) there’s no denying that she’s one hell of a writer. The character development, intricate details and plot twists of the Harry Potter series even had a chick lit reader like myself hooked.

But of course, where would the series be without romance. From Harry’s first kiss with Cho Chang under the nargle-infested mistletoe to the happy ending at Platform 9 and ¾ 19 years later (and the directors’ terrible ageing attempts), there’s no doubt that love is a key part of the tale.

So in order to celebrate the much-loved franchise, I thought I’d put together a list of my top 5 favourite Harry Potter couples (feel free to debate me).

5. Remus Lupin & Nymphadora Tonks

The films kinda skipped the backstory behind this one, but they are still the cutest. In book 6 Tonks loses her metamorphmagus skills and we all think she was in love with Sirius… until right at the end of book 6 she confesses she’s in love with Lupin and they get together at Bill’s hospital bed after he’s been savaged by a werewolf. Perhaps an unlikely pairing due to the age gap and the whole werewolf thing, but like the Tanzanian chips mayai (chip omlette), some things just inexplicably work. Their ending is beautifully tragic, but their legacy lives on in their son Teddy, who goes on to bag a hot French girlfriend.

4. Harry Potter & Ginny Weasley

Of course, I couldn’t not include the obvious. I’ll admit, the films didn’t quite capture the chemistry the way they did for Ron and Hermione, but in the books it’s a true love story. Ginny starts off as Ron’s shy younger sister who has a huge crush on Harry, but by book 5 she’s blossomed into this sassy, fiery redhead who can bat bogey hex anyone who crosses her. After things have gone tits-up with Cho Chang, Harry comes to his senses and realises he fancies her, but by then its too late and she’s dating Dean Thomas! But then they break up and she still fancies Harry so it’s all good.

3. Albus Dumbledore & Gellert Grindelwald

Dumbledore remains pretty asexual throughout the books, appearing more of a lone wolf character, although he did get close with the dark wizard Grindelwald in his youth before he turned out to be a wrong ‘un. Until, when asked about any previous girlfriends, JK reveals that Dumbledore is in fact gay, and him and Grindelwald were a thing. WHY WAS THIS NOT IN THE BOOKS? Of course they’re already amazing but this would have made them SO MUCH BETTER. The burning lust, the forbidden passion, the bitter fued and heartache, and later on the final battle where Dumbledore defeats him, fueled with residual sexual tension… that’s a whole novel on it’s own right there. Would have been better than Fantastic Beasts.

2. Ron Weasley & Hermione Granger

I can’t believe I didn’t call this one. Ron’s disgust at Hermione’s crush on Lockhart. Hermione’s sneering remarks about Ron lusting after Fleur. Ron’s OUTRAGE at Hermione going to the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum. But our queen JK manages to pass it off as friendly banter, until book 6 where they seamlessly transition into lovers. Perhaps another chips mayai couple- on paper Ron doesn’t appear the perfect match for the genius Hermione, but in reality Ron’s down-to-earth humour compliments Hermione’s studious ways and the two have a sexual tesion that is unrivalled.

1. The James Potter, Lily Potter, and Severus Snape Love Triangle

So technically, this isn’t a couple but come on I couldn’t NOT mention this one. So throughout the books, James and Lily are painted as the golden couple. And on the other hand we had Snape- cold, bitter, giver of hilariously biting put-downs (although Harry destroys him in book 6 with the one-liner “there’s no need to call me Sir, Professor”). However, in book 5, we learn via the pensieve that things aren’t quite what they seem, as James actually used to bully Snape in school. (One things I LOVE is JK’s ability to create flawed heroes). Then, in hands-down the best plot twist of the entire series, it turns out Snape was actually IN LOVE WITH LILY, and the good guy all along. Perhaps in an alternate universe, Snape could have come to his senses and ditched his death eater pals sooner, and who knows what could have been.

Bonus round! The couple that should have been:

Neville Longbottom & Luna Lovegood

WHY THE HELL DID THIS NOT HAPPEN? Quirky, slightly misunderstood, march to the beat of their own drum… this pairing would have been a match made in heaven. One could argue that Luna could do better, but I say not- in book 7 Neville really comes into his own, blossoming from the awkward, accident-prone boy into the bold fiesty leader of the resistance. Instead Neville goes on to marry Hannah Abbott from Hufflepuff and Luna marries Newt Scamander’s great great grandson or something, which would probably work out fine, but Neville and Luna would have been AMAZING.

  1. I’ve no idea what their names were, but Mr and Mrs Weasley get my vote. All those kids, and they’re still devoted to each other, giving each other just enough space to be individuals while showing how tight they were.

    Lovely stuff!

In case it triggered the remaining right wing snowflakes who weren’t already upset at the inclusion of magic in the first place?

      1. The fact that you are not offended by anything in Harry Potter (magic, homosexuality, a lack of Jesus) means you are not a snowflake 🙂

  3. ” JK Rowling has become with her political antics (18 spare bedrooms)”

Odd ad hominem attack. Please explain further.
